An excerp about Educational Grant from Ford Foundation

Each regional office makes grants in fields that most effectively address problems in that region. In the Jakarta office, we support efforts in five key areas:

Education and Scholarship
We work to develop intellectual resources, educate new leaders and thinkers, provide disadvantaged people with access to higher education, and support innovative and pluralist approaches to religious education. One of our key initiatives helped establish an international doctoral program in Inter-Religious Studies through the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies—the world’s first interdisciplinary doctoral program in religious studies, co-sponsored by Muslim, Christian and secular institutions that share a commitment to inter-religious dialogue

Environment and Development
We support efforts that promote equitable access and sustainable use of natural resources to enhance environmental quality, improve livelihoods and create more just systems of natural resources management. We seek to enhance the role, voice and choices of local communities in the development, management and stewardship of natural resources. To establish a sustainable resource-management strategy that helps eradicate poverty and meet environmental and social justice goals, our work links rural communities with government, nongovernment, academic and commercial-sector institutions.

Governance and Civil Society
We work to promote direct participation of poor and marginalized groups in formal decision-making institutions. We support activities that seek to strengthen the transparency and accountability of civil society organizations in order to increase their legitimacy to demand state accountability and conduct public fundraising.

Media, Arts and Culture
Our work in this area aims to increase acceptance and appreciation of diversity, particularly in the area of cultural expression, and to strengthen the cultural sector as a vital voice nationally and internationally. We support development of stable and independent organizations, increased networking within the cultural sector and professionalism in arts administration and technical infrastructure.

Philanthropy
Our work seeks to develop a philanthropy sector that works with governments, universities, businesses, faith-based institutions and civil society organizations to promote social inclusiveness and environmental sustainability and justice. We also support creative new leadership and development training programs that link provincial and district governments, universities, local nongovernmental organizations and the private sector.

Sexuality and Reproductive Health
We support work that engages women’s and youth organizations and professional associations in the design, implementation, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of government agency policies and programs. The goal is to ensure that sexual and reproductive health information and services meet people’s needs and respect their human rights, including their right to access to standard quality of care. This includes promotion of men’s understanding of their roles and responsibilities with regard to respecting the human rights of women, protecting women’s health, and supporting their partners’ access to sexual and reproductive health information and services. We also support community outreach and service centers for people living with HIV/AIDS.
